Join Physical Geographer Rowena Forest as we explore the western edges of the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens to discuss and marvel at Northern California’s coastal landscape and landforms. We will discuss and observe local geology, the evolution of coastal landforms including marine terraces, the tectonic forces and mechanisms that are shaping the landforms of coastal Mendocino, and the interplay of the coastal landscape with the native ecosystems adapted to them.
This field trip will deepen your understanding of the geomorphic and tectonic foundations of the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens and of the California Coast.
The Details
Terrain: Main trails and narrower side trails as well, with some uneven terrain
Be prepared for the weather with appropriate layers and wear good walking shoes.
We recommend bringing along a refillable water bottle, a notebook, a pen, and a camera if desired.

Walk Registration
Capacity is limited! Registration for this guided walk must be completed in advance online or at the MCBG Store. The registration fee is $26.00 per participant and covers your admission for the day. The discounted rate for current MCBG Members is $16.00 – sign in to access your discount.
All fees are non-refundable unless the walk has been canceled or rescheduled by the Gardens. Proceeds support our nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. Your participation in our workshops, walks, and events directly fuels our education programs, makes free school field trips possible, and helps people of all ages and backgrounds build meaningful connections with plants and the beauty of the natural world.

About the Instructor
Rowena Forest is a physical geographer and science writer for Cal Geographic, with a lifelong personal and professional focus on California’s dynamic coastal landforms, geomorphology, tectonics, and native ecosystems. She holds a B.A. in Physical Geography from San Francisco State University, with a professional background conducting botanical mapping and habitat surveys on the California coast, the Sierra Nevada, the Farallon Islands, and the Northwest Hawaiian Islands; as well as historic ecological and geographical research.
Rowena grew up just down the coast in the tectonic landscape of rural coastal West Marin County, on a marine terrace at the southern tip of the Point Reyes Peninsula.
