Friends of the Gardens, affectionately known as FOG, is a dedicated nonprofit support organization that plays a vital role in helping the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens grow, thrive, and continue serving the community as a place of beauty, education, and connection to nature. Since its founding in 1999, FOG has contributed more than $672,000 to support projects, programs, and enhancements throughout the Gardens, making it one of the organization’s most impactful and enduring community partners.

Over the years, FOG-funded efforts have helped bring many meaningful visitor amenities to life, including the Gardens Entry Plaza, bluff restrooms overlooking the Pacific Ocean, electric carts for visitors with mobility challenges, and countless other improvements that make the Gardens more welcoming, accessible, and enjoyable for all. These contributions help ensure that visitors of all ages and abilities can experience the restorative beauty of the Gardens and connect more deeply with the natural world.

FOG is also beloved for its fun, festive, and community-centered fundraising events that bring people together in support of the Gardens. Signature events such as the annual Birdhouse Auction and Holiday Wreath Sale have become cherished traditions on the Mendocino Coast, blending creativity, volunteerism, and generosity in ways that reflect the spirit of the Gardens themselves. These events not only raise critical funds, but also foster friendships, community pride, and a shared sense of stewardship for this treasured public garden.

Every handcrafted birdhouse, wreath, raffle item, and volunteer hour represents the passion and dedication of community members who believe in the Gardens’ mission and future. FOG volunteers and supporters help create experiences that are joyful, welcoming, and deeply rooted in community connection.

Becoming a Friends of the Gardens member is a wonderful way to deepen your connection to the Gardens while supporting its continued growth and impact. Members enjoy the opportunity to meet fellow supporters, participate in meaningful projects and events, and play an active role in helping the Gardens flourish for generations to come.

Meetings are typically held on the first Tuesday of the month in the historic Farmhouse at Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens. Gatherings begin at 4:00 PM, generally last less than an hour, and are followed by refreshments and social time among members.
