Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, 47 acres of botanical bliss fronting the Pacific Ocean

December is the month to donate

The Gardens' annual funding appeal

Thank goodness we all have the Gardens.

Standing on the plaza you can see the changes in light and color that mark the arrival of autumn. The softening of the garden is very comforting and soothing after the sheer exuberance of the summer. Only this time of year, and very briefly, the Katsura tree emits its wafting fragrance of burnt sugar accompanied by the falling leaves.

It has been a joy and honor to welcome so many members and guests to the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens this year. And it is so moving to see the new and evolving ways in which people experience them. In the past, the great majority of our visitors were happy to make their favorite loop on the trails but now, with a new appreciation of the outdoors, I’ve been noticing how people take their time – perhaps sitting and reading a book, enjoying a long watch of the ocean or dancing with earbuds on the event lawn. People being in the Gardens, experiencing the Gardens, rather than seeing the Gardens.

Watching this in recent months has crystallized my thoughts about what defines a garden. You can have beautiful displays of dahlias, interesting and attractive botanical collections, and well-designed vistas but without people it is simply a landscape, not a garden. Gardens need people. People to care and tend it, enjoy it, gather and celebrate in it. And you are those people.

This is our annual appeal for financial support which fuels our essential operations. Your support creates and nurtures the Gardens and we truly would not have this special place without you. The gifts we receive for our annual appeal go directly to the nuts and bolts of running this precious garden by the sea. Tools, mulch, irrigation, wages and yes, nuts and bolts, are needed to keep the gardens strong and vigorous.

We realize there are many important non-profits asking for your support and we hope that you will consider a gift to us this season. We hope you are able to come and experience the Gardens soon and often - take that walk, read that book or maybe dance.

Wishing you a rejuvenating season,

Molly Barker
Executive Director, Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens
