Our Annual Appeal for Funding

Donate to the Gardens' annual funding appeal

A landscape becomes a garden when there are people who love it, maintain it and build it to create a shared experience. Thank you for being part of this creation. Collectively, we brought in over $100,000 during last year’s annual appeal. Congratulations, this is an all-time high for the Gardens!

Where does this money go? The usual suspects such as plants, wages, lightbulbs and educational materials are always needed, but a healthy chunk of those funds go to the care and feeding of our stalwart and tenacious Special Projects volunteers. They build and fix things like nobody’s business, and that does require a constant feeding of raw materials. They can convert common, but expensive, materials such as posts, planks and nails into function and beauty. These volunteers keep our wells and pumps running, fix aging wiring and rebuild our unique, iconic structures. We absolutely could not complete a majority of building projects without their help but they need to be fed on a regular basis. This is where the rest of us come in. We provide the raw materials, and the crew goes to work. Think of it as a matching gift!

A very recognizable example was the reconstruction of the Dahlia Garden arbor this summer. The arbor is iconic to the Gardens – it is the punctuation mark to the rows and rows of exuberant dahlias, the favorite wedding spot and a framed view pointing west to the ocean. It was designed and built some 20 years ago (again, by volunteers!) and was in serious need of refreshing. It was especially important to keep the unique design including the native Wax Myrtle branches that decorate the front and sides. It is beautiful. Go see for yourselves! The cost of materials was $13,700 and the value of the volunteer-donated labor was $18,000. Our volunteers have since moved on to rebuilding the Nursery Shade structure.

So please don’t let our builders go hungry. Give generously this year and make them especially happy.

Thank you again for a fantastic year in the Gardens,

Molly Barker
