Retail Nursery Assistant
Part-time seasonal: 24 to 32 hours per week
Reports to: Executive Director
The Retail Nursery Assistant is responsible for all aspects of MCBG’s retail nursery which involves a broad range of tasks including inventory control, meeting sales goals, care of purchased material, customer service, and supervising volunteers.
Retail Nursery/Sales:
- Meet budgeted sales goals
- Greet and assist visitors with plant selection, plant identification, pest/disease diagnosis, cultural information and other questions
- Respond to inquiries received via phone, email, and online platforms
- Unload trucks, price plants and restock
- Special order plants for customers
- Hold two major plants sale events per year
- Create and post signage in the nursery
- Create and oversee the creation of aesthetically pleasing displays
- Maintain a neat and thoughtfully organized retail nursery
- Assist Garden Store staff with large plant purchases and issues at check-out
- Coordinate with Marketing Department to create radio, newspaper and online advertisements
Ordering and Receiving:
- Purchase appropriate plant material, annually
- Track expenses and stay within budget
- Receive orders into point of sale system and submit invoices for payment
- Maintain necessary levels of supplies: horticultural, propagation, sales and office supplies
- Purchase seed
- Maintain relationships with current vendors
- Train and set up volunteers; demonstrate tasks, provide guidance and appreciation
- Direct and supervise community service workers
Facilities
- Maintain the nursery areas in a safe and tidy manner
- Maintain and replace wagons/carts, equipment and tools as needed
Miscellaneous:
- Coordinate closely with Nursery Propagation Assistant
- Attend staff meetings
- Assist with maintaining an inviting Plaza area, including watering Plaza and Café plants
- Maintain and back up digital records
- Provide Marketing Department with accurate information for educations materials
- Assist with Festival of Lights, Art in the Gardens, and other events/tasks as needed
- Abide by the personnel policies of MCBG
Skills and Experience:
- Retail nursery experience including customer service and display - minimum 2 years
- Wholesale plant purchasing experience
- Knowledge of regional ornamental plants
- Gardening knowledge
- Computer skills including email, internet, point of sale, Microsoft Word and Excel
- Must enjoy working with the public and volunteers
- Must be able to establish productive working relationships with a broad array of individuals
- Must have the physical ability to lift and carry 30 pounds
