Learn how to identify edible seaweeds.
Our nation's growing interest in health, sustainability and nutrition means a growing interest in sea vegetables. Join a walk on the beautiful Mendocino Botanical Garden headlands with Larry Knowles, owner of Rising Tide Sea Vegetables, who will share his passion for edible seaweeds. Learn to identify edible seaweeds, taste them and discover great ways to prepare kelp cuisine. Find out why seaweeds are good for you, how they grow and how they are harvested sustainably. There will be an ample supply of sweet and salty sea veggie treats for everyone to eat during the walk. Larry loves the adventure of the harvest throughout the summer and is articulate about this work. He has appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, on the Gene Burns show Dining Around, and locally on KZYX-Z to discuss his passion for nutritious sea veggies. He is also committed to harvesting sea vegetables in a way that ensures the plants, and all other life forms associated with them, regrow healthy and whole each year. He'll answer questions such as, "do you pick and eat that stinky stuff off the beach?" (no!), and he'll paint a picture of this truly unique local cottage industry. Class will meet at the Garden Store Entrance and will walk out to the Headlands together. Class is $10 for nonmembers and $5 for members. For details contact Master Gardener Kristina Van Wert at 707-964-4352 ext 13. Dress warmly and wear shoes suitable for walking on wet, slippery rocks.
