Bloom Blast! January 19, 2011
It's raining Coast Silktassles!
Garrya elliptica
Also known as Coast Silktassel, this elegant shrub is at its best in winter, when 6 to 8 inch silver- green catkins dangle gracefully from its branches. All members of the genus are dioecious, meaning male and female flowers are on separate plants. Male plants are more widely grown, as their inflorescences are longer and showier. Native to the Pacific coast from San Luis Obispo up to Southern Oregon, Garry elliptica is an excellent choice for coastal gardens, including those subject to deer browse. Cultivars ‘James Roof’ and ‘Evie’ are embellished versions of the species, with catkins longer and more profuse.
You can purchase your very own Coast Silktassel at the Gardens’ Nursery.
