Bloom Blast! November 3, 2010

Russula sanguinea (Rosy Russula)

One of our prettiest mushrooms, Russula sanguinea has previously been misidentified as Russula rosacea. Whatever you call it, the Rosy Russula is easy to identify by its red cap, rosy pink stipe, brittle flesh, and acrid taste (you don't want to be tasting this one!). Found at the Gardens under pines and in the grassy areas of the Event Lawn, this beauty is a sure sign tht the mushroom "blooming" season has begun!
