Bloom Blast! September 2, 2010

Crotalaria agatiflora, canary bird bush
(pictured above)

Crotalaria is a beautiful evergreen shrub characterized by the flowers that look like a family of canaries perching on a branch. A member of the pea family, the large (up to 1.5") yellow-green flowers bloom on flower stalks in the summer through fall. The soft, blue-green leaves grow on branches that can get leggy with age; trim it lightly a couple of times a year otherwise this plant can sprawl to 12 feet tall and wide. Plant in full sun or part shade, water regularly., but it can handle some drought as well.

A native to the upland areas of eastern Africa, the tips might freeze at around 27° F but the plant is hardy to about 20-25 degrees F (USDA zones 9 to 11). Flowering diminishes in hot inland valleys in summer but resumes in fall. A fun flower to add to the garden and deer resistant too! Blooming now in the Perennial Garden.
