Bloom Blast! July 21, 2010
Verbena bonariensis, Brazilian vervain (pictured above)
Now putting on a show in the Perennial Garden!
Verbena bonariensis, is a rapid-growing, clump-forming tender perennial. The tall (growing 4 to 6 feet in some gardens), upright branching stems hold clusters of magenta-purple flowers from early summer through late fall. It is most effective growing in the middle of the border, with a backdrop of taller plants behind it and bright colors in front. Drought tolerant once established, excellent for cut flower use, and attractive to butterflies, this is a great plant for the garden! Grow in average, moist but well-drained soils in full sun on the coast; it can tolerate poor soils as long as drainage is good. Plants will also freely self-seed.
