Pieris formosa explodes its erect white urn shaped flowers earning the common name, Lily of the Valley Bush. Lily of the Valley it’s not, as it grows upwards of 10 ft. with lovely evergreen foliage. The new growth on many cultivars turns fiery red, aging to muted pink.
A superb shade-loving, flowering evergreen shrub, Pieris japonica and its many cultivars differs with pendent 6 inch white urn flowers accompanied with bright red and bronze, aging to cream new growth.
All Pieris bloom late winter to early spring and require the same part shade, moist, acidic, and well-drained soil as their Rhododendron and azalea relations. They are deer resistant and can be grown successfully in full sun along the cool coast.
Large specimens of Pieris ‘Forest Flame’, a hybrid between P. formosa ‘Wakehurst’and
P.japonica can be found in our Woodland Garden sporting hot red new growth and panicles of pristine, pure white flowers. Growing nearby is Pieris ‘Flaming Silver’ showing off its silver edged leaves and brilliant deep red new growth. Quite an eye catcher when the pendant white blooms share the spring spotlight.
There are three lovely cultivars available in our Nursery for sale, P. ‘Flaming Silver’, P. ‘Little Heath’, a dwarf, with silvery-white margined leaves, perfect for pots as it grows to 2’ tall and wide, and P. ‘Valley Valentine’, dusty red to pink panicles of urns shining against dark green foliage on a plant that grows ultimately to 7 feet.
