When meandering through the garden this month, be sure to take a detour off the main trail, down towards the fresh water marsh. You will be greeted by the heavenly scent of the Chinese Magnolia (Magnolia doltsopa ).
This specimen outdoes itself every year with a profusion of luscious, white, fragrant blooms that last for several weeks. The Chinese Magnolia has a form more tranquil and carefree than other Magnolias, holding its lax leaves on long weeping branches. A touch of shiny bronze on the underside of each leaf catches the late day sun beautifully.
A chorus of frogs and a well placed bench nearby offers a perfect setting to inhale and admire.
