PACIFICA IRIS COLLECTION

Pacifica iris

Pacificas, or Pacific Coast irises, are mainly from California, Oregon, and Washington. While they are not endangered, they're not in abundant supply either. There are very few natural hybrids, partly due to the isolation of species, but mostly due to the very stubbornness of the Pacificas. They do not cross pollinate and produce seed. However, to tell hybridizers that something can't be done only encourages them to try harder, and our collection is the result of their success. The colors of Pacifica iris species range from deep purple, red, and pink to cream, white, and yellow. They are distinguished by heavy veining in the flowers and their grass-like leaves. We now have hybrids that represent all these colors, and are more spectacular than the species. Irises have been bred for hardiness, ruffled flowers, and more vivid colors. Most can be grown in full sun in all but the hottest areas.
