THE HEATH AND HEATHER GARDEN
These beautiful, undemanding plants require full sun, yet cool soil, and perfect drainage. When young, a constant supply of moisture is required. Our mild maritime climate and sandy, acidic soils create an ideal environment for them. Broad differences in size and form, in addition to the wide variety of colors, allow exquisite arrangements of heathers and heaths in even small gardens. Flower colors include pink, lavender, white, magenta, amethyst, mauve, purple, and red, complimented with foliage colors of copper, pink, gold, silvery gray and almost infinite shades of green. Heather flowering times vary with species, beginning in the early winter and continuing into late summer and early autumn when they peak. This is a major plus for heathers — they look their best when most other plants in the garden have long since faded. As a group, heaths and heathers provide nearly year-round blooms here in our coastal garden. |
