WHAT'S BLOOMING — WINTER

Winter in the Gardens is a peaceful time. In the off-season quiet, our resident wildlife can be spotted wandering around the grounds. It's the perfect time to relax and take in the lovely, spare winter light as it streams through the trees. The winter quiet of the Gardens is contrasted with some interesting activity offshore with the annual California grey whale migration. The whales can easily be observed from the Gardens' headlands as they pass by, spouting and sometimes breaching out of the water.

Although this season may not bring a profusion of flowers, the large photo below shows one of our early, winter-blooming rhododendrons which herald the coming season.

Winter does bring wild mushrooms! Because a wide variety appear throughout our grounds each rainy season, we have developed a mushroom guide (with photographs) to help you learn more about the fungi you might see on a winter's visit.
