Nursery Assistant

Seasonal (Mar-Oct)
Part-time: 2-3 days per week, including either Saturday or Sunday 
Reports to: Nursery Manager

The Nursery Assistant position involves a broad range of retail, nursery and office tasks including selling plants, creating attractive displays, providing customer service, plant/nursery maintenance, basic point-of-sale system use, and unloading/receiving plants. The following is a general listing of work responsibilities:

Maintenance: 55%

  • Weeding, watering, fertilizing, spraying, pruning, deadheading, and cleaning
  • Sowing, transplanting, dividing plant material; recording detailed propagation records 
  • Displaying plants in an aesthetically pleasing way; refreshing or clearing old displays
  • Maintaining the Nursery in a tidy, weed-free, and attractive manner
  • Receiving plant deliveries:  Unloading trucks, inspecting and refusing unsatisfactory plant material, counting for accuracy, calling wholesaler to report shortages or problems
  • Moving plants to and from nursery using carts, wagons, and hand carts
  • Entering/looking up data in the point-of-sale system,  printing labels, labeling plants 
  • Occasionally placing plant orders when the manager is out 

Customer Service: 35%

  • Greeting  visitors in a pleasant and professional manner
  • Providing plant identification, pest/disease diagnosis, cultural information, basic verbal horticultural consultations for visitor and locals; looking up information if answer is unknown
  • Assisting customers in selecting plants; provide carry-out service
  • Working two plant sales a year (spring and fall) and working other events/days as required 
  • Answering phone calls and emails in a professional manner 

Other: 10%

  • Working alongside and instructing volunteers
  • Coordinating with Nursery Manger and other nursery staff regarding schedules and tasks 
  • Creating signage using Microsoft Word and laminator 
  • Assisting with event set up
  • Responding to emergencies 
  • Assisting other staff members as needed
  • Attending staff meetings 
  • Using the MCBG staff radio


  • Enjoys working with the public and helping people
  • Interest in working with plants; retail or nursery experience a plus 
  • Clear communication skills
  • Ability to lift 35 lbs
  • Willingness to work in inclement weather (rain gear provided)
